Too many things to choose, dont know where to start with. in the end, I join Az & Fad together on "Calendars & Astronomy".
Class start at 1pm, teacher start with a brief iintroduction on whats is GEMS & why do we need to take & pass GEMS. Yawnz.... ... .. .
Finally the real thing begins, it is quite interesting. Moon can be used to predict weather (rainy seasons), by using the angle of the horn of the waxing cresecent.
What have i learnt ->
Why do people invent calenders?
Provides sense of understanding and controlling time. Satisfy the needs of society. Serve as a source of cultural identity. Provide a basis for fortune telling and geomancy.
How Many calenders are there?
There 40 types of calendars in use today O.O".
3 Types of Calendars
- Solar (Dates synchronised with the orbit of the Earth around the Sun)
- Lunar (Dates synchronised with the orbit of the Moon around the Earth)
- Lunisolar (Dates synchronised with both orbit of the Moon and the Sun)
Public Holidays in Singapore!
- Total 11 of them
- 3 of them are secular holidays (National Day, Labour Day, New Year's Day).
- 8 are religious/ethnic holidays, 2 Chinese; 2 Christian, 2 Islamic & 2 Indian.
- 4 are fixed date
- 7 are movable date
- In some years, there are twelve PH
4 Fixed Date Holiday
New Year Day, 1st Jan; Labour Day, 1st May; National Day, 9th August; Christmas, 25th Dec.
7 Movable Date Holiday (Due to different type of calenders, thats why it moved)
Luna New Year(2days), Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Haji, Good Friday, Vesak Day, Deepavali.
How do the ancients keep time?
They built Structures to track the positions of the Moon & Sun.
e.g. the Stonehenge in England; the Mayan building in Mexico
Non-astronomical signs as crude calendars?
- The Hesiods (800 BC) in the Mediterranean listened to the cry of migrating birds to tell them that it is time for ploughing and sowing.
- The Yami fisherman (Taiwan) observed the presence of flying fish to determine the start of the fishing seasons.
